Why cats are better than dogs! – By Miss Bunny

I know this is a very contentious issue, and I guess that is why I chose to write about it. Following on from National Dog Day I have decided to dedicate this article to man’s other best friend; the cat! I am a mad cat woman, and I’m not afraid or ashamed to admit it. Don’t get me wrong I love dogs, and all other animals (except for wasps and jellyfish – due to being stung by both), but cats hold a very special place in my heart. Up until I left home for university I had lived with cats since I was born, and I find it very hard that I have been cat-less for the past 6 long years! Due to our lives being so up in the air and because Mr Bunny and I have lived in 7 different houses/flats in the past 6 years, it hasn’t been practical to have a pet any bigger than a gerbil. Now that both of our gerbils have passed away I am determined to get couple of kittens as soon as it practical, which will most likely be another couple of years. We have decided to spend the next few years travelling the world, with our first trip to SE Asia planned for October! Unfortunately we won’t be able to pack a kitty cat into our suitcase.

So anyway, I am writing this post to show that cats are equally deserving of a national day as dogs! They may not help the army to defuse bombs or work with a disabled person in a practical way, but they have their uses. In my opinion cats show as much love and affection as dogs, and all the cats I have been privileged enough to share my life with have been extremely loyal and have demonstrated empathy towards me on many occasions. Cats can feel when you are upset just as dogs can. Every time I have been ill whilst living with cats they have sensed it and have sat on my knee to keep an eye on me and to keep me warm. I have never experienced that from a dog. Cats are also very spiritual and sensual creatures, something which I can’t see in dogs. Cats can sense energy and respond to it, and in my opinion and experience they can see things that us humans can’t. I really get the feeling that cats have one foot in each world.

Aside from this cats have practical uses in our lives. Cats have been used to accelerate healing in people during convalescence, and to calm people with mental illnesses such as dementia.  They are great companions for people of all ages, but need to be supervised when with very young children, just as dogs do.

So what do you think? Are you a cat person, a dog person, or both?
